About the Founder

Resume (PDF)

I was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Pleasant Hill, a small town in the East Bay Area of California. Growing up, I had a keen interest in gardening and nature. Those experiences started me on a path to attend University of California Davis where I received a Bachelor’s in Plant Science and a Master’s degree in International Agricultural Development. In the early 1980s, I lived in East Africa, working on a refugee resettlement project in Northeastern Uganda, and with a program assisting small-scale farmers in the Rift Valley of Kenya. I also taught agriculture and biology at a boys high school in rural Kenya.

In returning to California in 1987, I was hired by UC Davis to help launch a new statewide extension program in sustainable agriculture. During my 21 years with that program, I worked with groups across California to provide educational programs and resources related to agriculture and the environment. In 1996 I was also appointed California state coordinator for the USDA Western Region SARE program and served in that capacity until my retirement from UC in 2008.

I am married to Sarah Chaney, an ESL professional. Sarah and I were inspired to move to the Pacific Northwest, and relocated to Corvallis in 2008, and DEC Education Services was established at that time. I have since completed a Master’s in Education (2014) from Portland State University, and established an extensive portfolio of educational projects. Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, hiking, and travel.
